Sagrada Família

We went to Sagrada Família on the first day but it nearly didn't happen... We messed up and didn't book tickets in advance like I was advised to and it was sold out. There are 2 tickets just Sagrada Família €26 and one with tower €36. All sold out for the days that we were there for.

The morning of our flight I just checked to see if there was tickets as I was walking home from the gym and there were 2 tickets with tower for Saturday 3:30pm. I got them so quick wasn't even sure I did get the right thing. So lucky to get tower tickets as that was what we were after.

We thought we would see the Sagrada Família everywhere like the Acropolis in Athens but turns out no as it's not on a mountain super high up in the city. It's just right in the middle of the city. It's big but cos it's not high up you can't see it till you're near it. It was a a half an hour walk 1.2 miles from our hotel but we'd been for breakfast, went to Barcelona Cathedral, went to Las Ramblas and this churro place before we got there .

We were early so was just taking random photos outside and wandering around. We were going to sit somewhere for a drink but didn't end up finding a place we liked the look of

Nativity Façade

Amazing at how much detail there is. This is the most detailed part - the Nativity
Façade which is the first to be completed. It's has the most Gaudí influence. It's dedicated to the birth of Jesus and scenes on life. Gaudí intended it to be in colour but not sure why it's not.

With your online ticket if you download the app you get an audio guide. We went for the express as the full one was taking too long and I can't even remember what was said.

The inside was surprisingly really bright! Usually churches/cathedrals are dead dark and can be pretty depressing.

The columns resemble trees and branches

Passion Façade

The Passion Façade is a lot more plain, simple and resembles the bones of a skeleton. The suffering of Jesus during his crucifixion.

Going up the tower...

Was really disappointed going up the tower as we were expecting a panoramic view of the city but this is all you got to see. You go up the lift then it was just a small bridge you walked across. People weren't moving across the bridge we were really confused and it turns out it's cos it's the only point where you get to see anything. You get to see a bit going down the spiral staircase. There's 2 towers you can go up and we went up the tower on the Nativity Façade.

The museum

Virgin Mary's Spire - this was only completed in December 2021

It's mad how this was started in 1882 by an architecture called Fancisco de Paula de Villar then in 1883 Gaudí took over and it's been going on for 142 years and it's still not finished. The fact that Gaudí knew he was never going to finish it in his lifetime it was such a big project. He sadly died after being hit a by a tram and no-one recognised him and thought he was a homeless person so got left. If he was recognised he probably could have been saved.

It's suppose to finish in 2026 so still over a year to go before it's completed. How it's just been funded privately and now obviously by ticket sales which aren't cheap with the amount of visitors it has just daily never mind in a year.

It is worth going to and the main thing in Barcelona to see. Just the tower don't be too excited that you're going to get a great panoramic 360 of the city cos you're not. The tower is like right in the middle and not even at the end so you're never going to get a great view without it being blocked by the other towers and things going on!
