After 5 days of being back home from Japan and China. Me, my mum and dad had booked to go on a cruise in 5 weeks. We flew into Venice and stayed 3 nights there then got the cruise from Venice. Mum has been saying she wants to go to Venice for ages. I wasn't that bothered as I went with Holly in 2022 post covid.
The day we were flying I still had to go into the office in the morning then went to the gym for a quick session. Got home, got a shower and washed my hair then we headed to Sindy's to leave the car at her house as we were flying from Manchester Airport.
Our flight was meant to take off at 6:10pm but we didn't even board the plane till 6:20pm and took off at 6:55pm. It was 9:47pm when we landed and got a €40 taxi to the hotel. We stayed in Marghera which was on the other island to Venice. We got to the hotel at 10:55pm and it was a horrible and old hotel.
Everything was old and in a bad condition. By the time we got settled and showered it was gone midnight.
Didn't have a good first night it was noisy as the people upstairs were either moving in to leaving and the church bells were chiming at 8am. Mum wanted to change rooms so was faffing about for ages trying to pick a room she liked. Me and my dad couldn't be bothered to change rooms but she insisted so was changing to a bigger disabled room when we were getting back. By the time we actually left the hotel it was 10am.
We went to a bakery around the corner and got a custard croissant
It was actually quite cold. I had a t-shirt, hoodie and bomber jacket and I was cold. It was colder than back at home.
It was weird being back in St Mark's Square nearly 4 years later. It's definitely a lot nicer in the sun!
Mum needed the toilet but the public toilets are €1.50 so we ended up going to a little cafe to shelter from the rain.
Pistachio cannoli
Suso matcha gelato! €2.50
For dinner we got these pizzas which were nice.
We got the bus back to the hotel and went to the supermarket.
The new room was bigger as it was a disabled room but it wasn't any better. There wasn't actually more space as we couldn't open the cases unlike in the original room. The shower head was broke and flooded the bathroom so they had to change it.
Got this yoghurt from the supermarket. It was disappointing. Pistachio flavour was very weak and the little wafers not sure if they were meant to be like that but tasted stale.
Venice - Day 2
Venice have now introduced a new day trip access fee. There are certain dates mainly Friday - Sunday and other exclusion days where you have to pay a fee if you enter Venice between the hours of 8:30am - 4pm. The fee is €5 if you pay 4 days before or it's €10 on the specified days per person. It's mad though because no-one is actually checking whether you have paid the fee. But if you do by chance get checked and you haven't paid you can be fined from €50-€300. Our second day was a Friday so I'd already pre paid the fee at home when we knew we were going to Venice. But the night before we decided we weren't going back in so I cancelled it (you can cancel 24 hours before) and got a full refund. The weather was worse than the day before so we ended going to an indoor shopping centre.
We had lunch in the supermarket which was super popular. They had a hot food counter in the middle of it then tables where you could sit down and eat. Loads of people were getting the food to eat there and then or to take out so we thought we would also give it a try. The cannoli wasn't great but the fish was nice. At first we didn't know how it work but each item was by weight.
After wandering round the shops and supermarket we went into Venice and didn't have to pay the access fee.
We went and got a make your own pasta box. The place I found was shut so we ended up going to another one and it turns out it was the same one I went to last time when I went to Venice.
I got a polpette - meatballs ravioli - there was 3 meatballs but got quite a few ravioli but the sauce was salty
Mum got black squid seafood linguine
Dad got clam tomato base fusilli
We walked to see Venice casino as it's meant to be really nice inside and turns out it was down a road we kept walking past but didn't realise it was there as it's hidden.
You have to register and pay to go in it. It was €50 but you get €20 back for 1 game and a drink. We don't know how to play so wasn't worth it but you could walk through to the other side of the canal where people get off the boats to go to the casino which was cool.
After we got the bus back to the hotel.
The next morning we were checking out to go and get the cruise. Mum and dad were faffing about packing and whatever before checking out so I went back to the bakery we went to on the first morning and they do do pistachio croissants! They must have sold out as there was only 2 left. It was €1.50 and it was really nice and fresh what I've been craving in Italy!
I went for a wander as we still had a bit of time before we had to check out and leave. Don't know if it's a Saturday thing but there was a really big market. I had a wander around then went back to the hotel and told my mum and dad about it and they came down to have a look.
After looking around and not buying anything we headed back to the hotel to grab our stuff and get the bus into Venice then took the people mover for 1 stop to the cruise terminal. Next stop cruise!
