The Dark Kitchen

Went to The Dark Kitchen on Allerton Road for dinner with Holly last night. It's a new restaurant and bar that changes the menu every 3 months. Currently they have Hello Sushi and Lucha Libre - Japanese food and Mexican street food. Hello Sushi has been there from the start so not sure if this ever changes but Lucha Libre only came on the menu last week. There did used to be Lucha Libre restaurant in town next to the Fact Cinema that I've been to a few times.

We got there just before 6pm - we hadn't booked and it wasn't busy when we got there. They had to check if they had a table for us and they had one but said we could have it 8pm which was fine for us.

Holly went for Lucha and sushi where as I went all sushi.

Sushi Plate (2 people to share) - 2 x prawn maki, 2 x katsu cali, 2 x tuna nigiri, 2 x salmon nigiri, 2 x char sui maki served with picked ginger and fennel - £16.95

I got the platter to myself as I didn't know what to get and it works out the same really - you don't even get that much so to share between 2 you would definitely need to order other bits. I swapped the spicy tuna cali for salmon nigiri.

The sushi looks better than it was. Definitely not the best sushi I've had. I think they were going for more presentation over taste. It's presented nice but taste wasn't the best.

Holly got:
Pilbil Tacos - 3 soft corn tacos topped with slow cooked pulled pil bil pork served with pickled red onions and coriander - £5.95
Spinach & Mushroom Quesadilla Vegan - Cheese filled toasted tortillas filled with spinach & mushrooms - £5.95
Char Sui Cali Maki Roll (4 pieces) - £5.95

The vegan cheese looked and tasted like glue - Holly was so sad that she got the vegan cheese as she can't really eat normal cheese as it gives her stomach pains. She said she rather have took the pain than eat vegan cheese.

I got churros with Biscoff sauce

Holly got the TDK Vegan Sundae - Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, with melted chocolate, strawberries, Biscoff biscuit and churros

The churros were good with the Biscoff dipping sauce that was definitely my favourite thing.
The idea of having a changing menu is good but when you're choosing presentation over taste it doesn't work. I know people eat with their eyes but it's still what you're actually eating and not what you're being presented. The point of food is to eat and not look at it. If you're after sushi I wouldn't recommend coming here but if you're wanting Lucha Libre - Mexican street then this is the place for you.

Lucha Libre

Dinner date with Danielle to Lucha Libre. It's been a couple of years now since I last went & I've never been for dinner only for lunch. We got the Tortilla Chips with Guacamole to share. I got the BBQ chicken burrito & Danielle got the halloumi & pineapple burrito.

My burrito was nice but I think it was cos I was hungry. I didn't like the green rice & didn't feel like there was enough BBQ sauce on the chicken. Could definitely done with more sauce. Danielle wasn't a fan of the green rice either & thought hers was a bit sickly with the halloumi. The nachos & guacamole was good though! I think I'll have to go back & try the quesadillas & churros!

Lucha Libre

So Danielle is finally back from Dubai after 6 weeks & Kelly came home for the weekend as she has a reading week. I think the last time I seen Danielle was my surprise 21st party in Kelly's back in August which was over 2 months ago! I didn't get to see her before she went to Morocco to volunteer with Kelly or after it as she was only back for a day or two then was off to Dubai. I also haven't seen Kelly or Hannah since we went to Almost Famous which was well over a month ago before they both started uni.

We went for lunch yesterday at Lucha Libre which is Mexican street food.

Mango Juice - £4.50

Kelly & Danielle got the Street Food Tray to share - £19.95
3x Pilbil Tacos, 2x Chicken Tostadas, 1x Maria Sabina Quesadilla & 1x Chorizo & Potato Quesadilla

Hannah got the Chargrilled Chicken Quesadilla - £4.50

I got Pibil Tacos - £4.75

Didn't realise how small they'd be... Ate them in like a minute!

I went the toilet & left my phone on the table...

I've only ever been to Lucha Libre once with Holly when we had the lunch deal & had the super hot tortilla soup which we couldn't handle.. The portions are tiny & could definitely do with more. I thought mine was going to be bigger didn't realise the taco was gonna be a mouthful size! Definitely would have had to order more if it was dinner. I also wished I got the quesadilla instead... But I wasn't sure as I'm not a fan of cheese I only eat it on pizza or like lasagne. I would never had a cheese sandwich or toastie. Danielle, Kelly & Hannah if you read this yes I am still annoyed I ended up giving a £2 tip as I was meant to get £3 change for my meal. Danielle gave me £1 & said take £2 out from the pot but I didn't hear her & the guy came over to take the money she said keep the change... I'd never leave that much tip ever!

After we went to Starbucks for a bit. They all got festive drinks as they're doing 2 for 1 on festive drinks between the afternoon everyday or something. I'm not too sure but you can Google it yourself. I didn't get anything as the festive range is latte's & hot chocolate which I don't like.

I stole photos that Kelly posted on her snap story. If you haven't seen already the John Lewis Christmas came out yesterday with Monty the penguin that everyone is now in love with & if you want one yourself, you'll be kinda glad it's actually sold out as it's £95!! That is one expensive penguin! But if you have no idea what I'm on about you can watch the ad here. The John Lewis Christmas ad has turned into a big thing now just like that infamous Coca Cola holidays are coming ad. I still think it's too early for Christmas even though it's cold enough for it, I don't get into till December even though later on when we left town they had a lantern parade to celebrate the opening of the ice festival up on Chavasse park for the ice rink & ice bar.
