Today was Cilla Black's funeral which took place at St Mary's church in Woolton Village which is up the road from mine. I was so sad & shocked when I heard the news I couldn't believe it. She was only 72 which is so young & where she died isn't far from where our apartments are in Spain!
I loved the 3 part series ITV did last September with Sheriden Smith about her. She was really good on it & it definitely got people talking about her with her celebrating over 50 years in show business. Unfortunately for us today many of us probably won't be hitting milestones like that since it's so much harder to break into the industry, you're gonna be that age once you get into it!
There's a lot of people in Liverpool who don't like her as she left Liverpool & never came back but still so many of us grew up watching her on TV whether it was Surprise Surprise or Blind Date. She was loved & most definitely a Scouser, everyone knows who she is. I understand that she should've came back but I guess fame & fortune people do leave for bigger cities. But at heart she was always that girl from Scottie Road. (Scotland Road to those not from Liverpool).
A lot of famous faces were in city for it with her best mate Paul O'Grady, Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Tom Jones, Christopher Biggins, Carol Vorderman, Jimmy Tarbuck & others. She was laid to rest next to her parents in Allerton cemetery.
While I was on the journalism course me & 2 other girls was asked to go out in the streets in town to get some vox-pops of what Cilla meant to them. I was shocked that there was a lot of people who didn't want to speak to us as they didn't have anything nice to say because she never came back to Liverpool or the fact they apparently knew her. But the people who did speak to use did have some really nice things to say about her. Really though she is from Liverpool she's one of us & she's gone now so people should have some respect. If it wasn't in work I would've lined the streets to see the cortège. It would have been nice to show my respect.
RIP Cilla you will be missed. A true Scouser & icon.
