Salzburg

After a 2.5 hr train from Vienna we got to Salzburg in the dark at 4:45pm. Our hotel was only down the round from the station. Once we walked out of the station we could see the hotel. It had been snowing in Salzburg and was a lot colder than Vienna.

We checked in and got settled in the room before heading out for dinner. We had to pay €7 (£6.31) for the 2 nights stay city tax. Weird because we didn't pay it in Vienna.

It wasn't as fancy as our Vienna hotel but it was nice and new. Had a hanging egg chair which was cool but put in the worst place. I had the bed by the window and couldn't watch the TV without the chair being in the way! So they didn't think that over but other than that the room was basic and spacious. Could have done with more places to put things like when you're getting ready just a table would have been good and space around the sink.

We booked a table at a Mexican called Die Cabreras for 6:45pm. It was a 15 minute walk away.
It was nice in there, small, cosy and busy. Good job we booked.

Guacamole mit Totopos im Lavasteinmorser - "Hass" organic avocado from Mexico with homemade corn criollo chips - €7.90

We got nachos - the tortilla chips were really good and crunchy. The bowl did look bigger than it was as it wasn't that deep. I could have easily eaten bowls of just the chips on their own.

Tacos Cochinito - Mayan style pork, slowly cooked in orange juice with Mexican spices, in soft corn tortillas (Mais Criollo) with red onions, marinated in lime juice and chilli habanero; Brandstatter butchery, local and well bread - €13.90

Tacos Cabrera - Shrimp with grilled peppers, gratinated with cheese in an iron pan - €14.90

I asked to have mine without coriander and my order went in fine then the guy came back and said "there is a problem" and I knew what he was going to say. My food was marinated with coriander so there was nothing they could do so I just said it was fine. Luckily it wasn't strong. I like Mexican food but it doesn't like me as they put coriander in everything which I hate. I guess if things are made fresh then they can easily take it out but most already have the sauce or marinade made which has it mixed in so they can't take it out.

After the meal I went to the toilet and managed to tell our waiter that it was Holly's birthday so wanted a cake. He asked me if I wanted chocolate cake or almond flan - I wish I said flan but didn't think we would like it so thought the safer option was chocolate cake. He actually forgot about it then clocked me and remembered and brought the cake over. It came from behind so she had no idea it was coming.

3/4 so far that she had no idea about. She should have got onto it by now but still had no idea so doing really well! The cake was warm but really dry. Should have tried the flan! But we got free chocolate cake!

On the walk back to our hotel across the road there was this place that said 24/7 so we decided to have a look at it was just a load of vending machines..

Never seen sushi in a vending machine before even though I think this would probably be a thing in Japan. Probably wouldn't get any sushi if I was hungry in the middle of the night - don't know how much I trust the fish..

When we got back to the hotel we watched The Empress on Netflix which is about Sisi that we learnt about in the Sisi museum when we were in The Hofburg in Vienna. It's the German version of The Crown. It is originally in German and dumbed into English. It's good but won't get the full story if you don't know about her.

We got up at 10am the next morning and went to Tortelier for breakfast. It was snowing and ended up snowing ALL day which got really annoying and boring. Snow is fun for a bit then you just get wet and it gets slippy. Just a general inconvenience.

We did only come here because they do waffles!

Fruit waffle - €9.90

The waffle was really thin but there was another under it.

Toast Tortelier - Grilled toast with avocado, feta, tomato + fried egg - €7.90

This was not what we were expecting and Holly was gutted when it came. There was hardly anything in the toast..

Service was SO slow - there was just this one girl running round like a headless chicken. Waited ages to be served and didn't know whether we were meant to go up to order then when we eventually did get served food took ages to come. The place was nice, service was crap and the food wasn't great.

After we walked to Mirabell Palace. Turns out we walked past it last night and this morning where the Christmas market is and didn't even realise..

So you can't go into the palace, you can just walk through it then through the garden.

Down the road from the garden of Mirabell Palace is the Mozart museum but it seemed a bit crap so we opted to go to Mozart's birthplace instead.

Didn't realise there was a river we had to cross it to get to Mozart's birthplace and to go to Fortress Hohensalzburg which you can see in the distance.

It was €12 (£11 - the exchange was really bad when we got to Salzburg. Wasn't too bad when we got to Vienna but as the days went it dropped. I only knew this because I was paying on my card and only paid cash when I had to) to go see Mozart's birthplace which was really interesting. Learnt a lot about him I didn't know about. If you scan the QR code at the start you can do the audio guide on your phone for free. I didn't do it but Holly did. It told you the same things that was already on the walls.

This is meant to be the most accurate portrait of Mozart.

Looking like Maleficent - probably where they did get their inspiration from. Such an interesting person - actual genius! Worth a visit if you go to Salzburg and think we made the right choice over going the museum.

This is part 1 of Salzburg - part 2 will be Fortress Hohensalzburg where we went after, dinner and our last morning before flying home.
