The Ballet

La Fille Mal Gardee at Wiener Staatsoper

On our second night in Vienna we went to the ballet. Holly loves the ballet and it's something that Vienna is known for so I got us tickets for Holly's birthday. I've never been to the ballet and wasn't sure if I would like it or if we would both understand it. Luckily our tickets were only cheap £31.24 if it wasn't any good.

We got the underground to Da Capo the Italian restaurant we tried to go to the night before booked for 5:15pm. It was just starting to get busy as we left as it was still early when we got there.

Margherite ripieni al Basilico e pinoli con zucca cipolle novelle, pomodori e gamberetti
Fresh pasta filled with basil and pine nuts served with oven-pumpkin, prawns, spring onions, cherry tomatoes and olive oil - €18.50

Verdure al forno - Various root vegetables (parsnip, parsley root and colour carrots) from the oven - €6.50

Ravioli di zucca e mandorle alla salvia con pere al vino rosso, robiola
Pumpkin almond ravioli in sage butter with braised red wine pears, rabiola cheese, pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds - €16.90

Our food came SO quick. It was nice, enjoyed it but when we got to the last piece of broccoli of our veg I found a hair so they took it off our bill.

Again as it was Holly's birthday I had to get her a cake but this time we both ordered a dessert and I told them it was Holly's birthday so she knew but we didn't expect the sparkler...

The sparkler went on for ages!

Torta tenerina emiliana con pinoli e crema di mascarpone gocce di cioccolato espresso
Fine chocolate cake with dark Valrhona chocolate, pine nuts, with mascarpone cream and espresso crumble - €9.90

Creme brulee alla e vaniglia e maracuja con mango e ananas
Creme brulee with passion fruit and vanilla, caramalised with brown sugar, served with mango and pineapple compote - €9.90

The creme brulee wasn't nice and the dish was really shallow. Was disappointed.

Then we walked over to Wiener Staatsoper for the ballet. We were reading the info and it said we had to leave our coats and big bags in a cloakroom but turns out we were in a box so we didn't have to. The venue was massive and really fancy.

Lighting was not good for photos!

We were in a box, with 3 seats in front of us then our 2 which were high chairs and then another single behind us. I couldn't see a thing which will explain the price of our tickets. I ended up having to stand up but still couldn't fully see what was happening on the left side of the stage. The woman behind us wouldn't have been able to see a thing but she was just on her phone. Then after the interval she didn't even come back.

The show was called La Fille Mal Gardee which was a comedy panto about a girl wanting to marry a guy but her mum wants her to marry someone else and how she does end up marrying the guy she wants. It was funny and luckily nothing too serious otherwise wouldn't have had a clue what was going on. It started at 7:30pm and there was an interval from 8:35 - 9:05pm and finished at 9:45pm.

After we got the underground back to the hotel and watched Free Guy in bed. Next day last morning in Vienna then to Salzburg!
