Grease

Went to see Grease with Tracy and grandma last night at the Empire Theatre. It was our Christmas present to grandma for her first ever trip to the theatre. We went to Tai Pan for dinner first - Not been here for years. They were shut for a bit due to hygiene and reopened.

We got 2 main dishes - seafood udon noodles - it was SO salty. I was thirsty all night and the portion was tiny. 3 meat roast (duck, crispy pork & char siu) on the bone with rice - with giant bits of Chinese leaf

4 dim sum - har gau, crispy prawn parcels with mayonnaise, chicken feet and got char siu churn fan (not pictured) - it was really dry and cold like it'd been left out for ages.

Food wasn't great and came to just under £55. Mei Mei is definitely better and where I've been going the only thing is there's no parking as it's in central town.

It was the first night so there was some teething issues - sound wasn't great on some of the cast as their mic were too loud and the props department weren't having a good time! It was good they did all the main well known songs but was weird because the guys weren't called the T-Birds.

Grandma thought it finished when it was the interval. Think she was ready to go home and said it was too loud! She's so hard to buy for as she doesn't want or need anything and has no hobbies - so think we just have to get her out the house to try different things.

The Book of Mormon

Went to see The Book of Mormon last night at the Liverpool Empire Theatre with Holly. It was a very last minute thing as we only booked tickets on Thursday afternoon - Holly was going to go on her own. We bought 2 single tickets on the same row either side of a pair. We were hoping the couple in between us would be nice and would swap so they were closer to the centre and we could be next to each other. 

I've heard of the play but had no idea what it was about. Brandon Flowers (front man of The Killers) is a Mormon but again don't know anything about the religion. My cousin Tracy went to see it last weekend so asked her what it was about and that was about as much research as I'd done into it. Holly said she googled but still had no idea. We knew it was comedy musical so hoped for the best. We only paid £26 for our tickets so even if it wasn't good we didn't spend loads. 

We got tickets on the left of the stage near the far end stalls. The opposite side of where me and Danielle sat when we saw SIX at Easter. We were row F so was pretty close to the stage. The couple that were the pair between us turned out to be nice people and swapped with us. At first they seemed a bit hesitant but we said they would be closer to the centre and they swapped so that worked well for us. They were good seats just couldn't really see what was happening to the left as it was restricted view and there was stuff happening there like they were looking that way at one point but we couldn't see what they were looking at.

It was really funny and we enjoyed it! Don't know how true to real life about Mormons it is. It's about 2 Mormons that have finished their missionary training and are sent out to village in Uganda to preach about their faith. The people in the village aren't interested as they have their own issues to deal with like HIV/AIDS, famine, female genital mutilation and a war lord. 

The people a couple of rows behind us were proper howling and snorting laughing but then also laughing at bits that weren't even that funny. The woman next to me after the interval found everything hilarious but we thought the first half was better. I would say if you're easily offended it definitely isn't for you as the jokes are borderline racist and a lot of sexual references. I do recommend if you want a good laugh and you definitely don't need to know anything about it before because all Tracy described to me was "Just basically about another part of the bible and getting people to believe. Just a bit of a pisstake" which sums it up very well. It's on in Liverpool till next Saturday 13th August then it continues its tour around the UK. There's still quite a few seats left and you could get lucky like us and manage to sit next to each other if you get single seats on the same row.

SIX the Musical

Went to see Six the Musical at the Empire Theatre last night with Danielle. Kelly and David have been raving about how good it is so we ended up booking tickets when we last seen each other after Christmas as Kelly was taking her mum so we just booked to go the same day.

It's about Henry VIII's 6 wives. So a bit like Hamilton but not as big or expensive. We went to the 5pm showing and it was 1hr 30 mins with no break as there was another showing at 8pm which I preferred without having to have a break and wasn't too long. We sat in the stalls but was quite far to the right. Would have preferred to be more central but we didn't have much choice of seats.

It wasn't what I was expecting when it started. It is just 6 woman on stage who play each of the 6 wives with a band on stage and sing their story. They were interactive with the crowd and was pretty much all singing and no talking. It was a history lesson as you learn about the wives because I couldn't name all 6 of them before the show or in the right order, just about know the rhyme of divorce, beheaded, died, divorce, beheaded, survived! I've listened to the soundtrack and I definitely know more now than I did after watching the show as once you're there you are listening but can't take it all in. The music isn't typical musical music it is like modern pop music and rap which is definitely more my thing and how it is compared to be like Hamilton. Like Kelly and David have said if you're tight for money and want something a bit cheaper than Six is the one you'd go to as Hamilton is twice the price and you have to go to London to see it. Six is currently doing a UK tour with it's last day in Liverpool tonight.

After it we met up with Kelly and her mum then went to Gino's 360 sky bar with her dad and Josh. I did go there the other week with my work mates but didn't take any photos so I definitely made up for it last night.

 We had 1 drink with them then me and Danielle went for sushi at AKA Sushi which used to be called Naked Noodle on Bold Streer which I've been to a few times as it's the best sushi in Liverpool.

New York Roll Maki - Tuna, avocado, apple, mayonnaise - £8.99

 

We tried this as it had apple in it which was something different. As Danielle was amazed at it was 2 pieces apple, 1 piece of avocado and 1 piece of tuna. The mayo was a bit spicy which I wasn't expecting and wasn't a fan of but it was nice.

I could have easily eaten all this all to myself and more but it was like 8:30pm so not the best time to be stuffing myself with sushi.

It was a nice night and we've said we need to go the theatre more often as the last thing I did go and see was Hamilton but that was in London. I think the last thing I saw in Liverpool was War House which was actually rubbish and disappointing and years ago!

War Horse

Last night I went to see War Horse in the Liverpool Empire Theatre with Danielle. I've not been to the theatre in over 3 years. The last thing I went to see was The Lion King back in 2014 just before I went to Florida. It was a like a proper date night we went for pizza in Crust then to see War Horse. We wanted to go to Vincent Kitchen but it's still closed from the other month when the place next door Elif had a fire. Both of them were shut but it's still not open but Elif is. We were going to go to Souk but it was dead and couldn't be the only people in there so ended up in Crust again. It was completely packed with no empty tables!

We got the Rustica - Tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, spinach, mixed pepper, aubergine, mushroom, courgette and added chicken as it was a veggie pizza. It was really nice and not too greasy which I hate about take out pizzas. We got the sweet potato wedges too.

The Christmas markets this year are outside St George's hall. They don't look that good but the back drop does look good. It's a bit of a strange place to be considering they're usually right in the middle of town. I wouldn't go out my way to go to them and unless you were down that end of town or get the train from Lime Street it's not somewhere in town you'd be. We didn't have time to go there as we did forget that they we there!

We got to the Empire for 7 the show started a bit late at 7:35 and finished after 10. It was quite empty in the middle. We had seats in the lower circle left of the stage right to the side which had a restricted view but wasn't actually that bad. There was just no leg room at all. My legs were aching throughout the first half and I just couldn't sit still. Danielle ended up swapping seats with me after the interval as she had the seat right on the end in the inside so there was more leg room. Also the people in front left so I could stretch my legs out over the seats in front. The seats were also really creaky! 

 It started off quite slow and wasn't feeling the first half. The second part was definitely better but I was so tired I was actually falling asleep not because I didn't like it or that it was boring it was just so dark. The story didn't go how I thought it was going too. It's about a horse - Joey that gets bought by a family. Albert the boy who owns the horse bonds with him but his dad ends up selling him to the army so he gets sent to war. Albert misses Joey so much he ends up joining the army even though he;s too young to be reunited with Joey. It was sad at the end and I nearly cried but just about held back the tears! 

The movement of the animals is actually amazing especially the horses. They look so realistic. The sound effects of gun shots were definitely too loud though. The poor girl next to us jumped every single time and spilt her drink so ended up giving it to her boyfriend to hold!

It wasn't as good as people made out or what I thought sadly. I definitely wouldn't see it again and unsure about actually recommending it. Luckily we got our tickets for £18 did nearly end up paying £29.50 for them but so glad we didn't as it wasn't worth that!

I do like going to the theatre and used to go all the time when I did drama. They just need to sort out the leg room situation as that's probably the only time I'm glad I'm not actually 6 foot tall!

Last night I went to see The Lion King at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool with Danielle & Gabby. Lion King is my whole childhood I was so obsessed everything I owned was Lion King & it was the only thing people would buy me for my birthday, Christmas. I think I probably watched it everyday & cried.

I think I've only ever seen the first Lion King in English once when I went to see it in 3D a couple of years ago. (I cried all the way through it, when the music started my eyes were streaming with tears) I watched on tape in Chinese! So it was a bit weird when I watched it in English to realise oh that's what that is in English even though I did understand it. On that same tap was Pinocchio & Snows White and the Seven Dwarfs also in Chinese. I've only ever seen them in Chinese.

Kelly went to see it last week & told me I might be a little disappointed since I've seen it in Disney World Florida which is slightly different as it's more aimed at children where as this one is more artistic more towards adults.

I'd say at first I was a little but it is a really good show. There's not much to give away if you've seen the film & know the story it's just shown slightly different with some of their own twists added to it. It's been getting great reviews in the newspapers, online etc.  

Our seats weren't great we were right at the top second to last row but you could see everything but there was NO leg room. My legs & knees were SO sore I just couldn't get comfortable & wore the wrong pants which didn't help! It was also really hot. Apart from that the show itself was really good & would so recommend you go & see it, they still have tickets left & is on till the 5th July. I only got mine 2 weeks ago so just check online or go to the box office!
